Lycabettus Hill

Mount Lycabettus rises 277 metres above central Athens, its bare limestone summit the highest point in the city and, according to legend, a rock dropped by the goddess Athena. A funicular railway climbs through a tunnel inside the hill from Kolonaki to near the top, where the small white chapel of Agios Georgios stands beside a café and an open terrace. From here the view takes in the Acropolis and Parthenon below, the grid of the city running out toward the port of Piraeus, and, on clear days, the Saronic Gulf and surrounding mountains.
