About

Ameya-Yokocho, known as Ameyoko, is a roughly 400-metre open-air market squeezed under and beside the elevated tracks between Ueno and Okachimachi stations. It began as a black market after World War II, when candy stalls (ame) and American goods gave the street its name. Today stalls sell fresh fish, dried seafood, seasonal fruit and street snacks side by side with clothing and discount goods, drawing especially large crowds in the days before New Year as shoppers stock up on osechi ingredients.
